Value in Complexity

Oct 02 2010

Times are tough!  We’re undergoing the slowest recovery in the US for all but its oldest living generation.  Globally, the lackluster economy is said to be the cause of many instances of social unrest.  But history shows that some of the most vibrant firms of today were started in tough economic times.  Ten years from now, we want that said of Barker Consulting Partners.

The launch of this blog also marks the launch of Barker Consulting Partners, a company dedicated to helping clients discover and nurture value, even in complex situations.

Reluctant at first to affixing my name to that of the company, I have been convinced by others I trust that doing so is not a matter of excessive pride but a way of communicating the personal commitment that the partners and I each make with respect to excellence and the ability to create value in complex situations.

We offer clients advice on two broad matters: business fundamentals and business development.

Business Fundamentals.  We’ve trademarked SALES PEOPLE MONEY® as the descriptor of the categories in which most fundamental business challenges are found: building revenue, managing staff and preserving financial resources.  While we can help in each of these areas discretely, we prefer assignments where we become sufficiently trusted by our clients to develop plans and help execute them across all of these challenges.

In some cases, we take some of our fees in equity making us look more like a private equity firm than a consultant.  That’s OK with us; we’d prefer fewer clients with deeper relationships than many clients with superficial relationships.

Business Development. Think three types: organic growth, applying SALES PEOPLE MONEY® with our clients, establishing break-out units and helping with acquisitions.

Again, for select clients, we consider taking some of our fees for this service in equity interests.  We’ll begin posting descriptions of these in our Special Initiatives section of the Barker Consulting Partners website.  I’ll be offering a sneak peak of one of these, called CalibraxKPI, very soon — prior to what we hope to be a more formal launch next month.

So keep checking in: despite the tough economic times, we have great projects we’re working on and will be announcing soon.
